For the longest time, I didn’t stick to a particular skincare routine. Instead, I used products that suited my skin without much thought (as you would when you are young and your skin is being good to you!). All that ended after I had my son. Even though having a baby was probably the happiest moment of my life, little did I know it would create havoc to my hormones and subsequently my skin.
Since then, my skin has been SUPER dry, sensitive and acne-prone. To tell you the truth, I felt like my skin caught up with me i.e. aged around 10 years in the space of 1! I started to have trouble picking out products that were effective in fighting my new skin issues because they were either super expensive or just didn’t work well enough.
A few months ago, while browsing on social media I discovered this line called “The Ordinary”. This brand talked about the importance of honesty and integrity when it came to skincare and was so ‘to the point’ without over marketing or over branding themselves – my kinda style!
I read rave reviews from the get go and thought to myself – ‘maybe it’s something I should check out, although I bet it’s going to cost a fortune with all the fantastic reviews’. Well, to my absolute pleasure the most expensive product they have cost under £15!!!!! So obviously, I indulged without hurting my wallet too much and picked up some of the products.
The more I read up on the skincare line, the more I realised that “The Ordinary” simplifies skincare by focusing on ingredients that target problematic skin concerns, but only with a fraction of the price you would find elsewhere.
I picked up the following serums:
- The Buffet
- Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
- Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
They all came in a transparent 30ml bottle with a dropper lid. I actually LOVE the simplicity and minimalistic feel of the whole product.
So, the website was definitely intimidating to read. I’m not very good with skincare and especially not good at biochemistry so all the long names got me so confused. It was described it as a multi-peptide serum that targets multiple signs of ageing all at once.
After a bunch of reading and research here goes my explanation to what the components of this serum do:
Matrixyl is palmitoyl-pentapeptide 3 – is a peptide that specifically stimulates collagen synthesis and skin repair.
Syn–ake is an anti-wrinkle material based on a synthetic tripeptide that “mimics” the effects of a peptide found in the venom of the Temple Viper snake.
Relistase is a peptide that is designed to increase skin firmness and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in at least two months of daily use.
Argirelox Fights expression lines by attenuating muscle contraction in the presynaptic pathway and is the perfect topical solution to complement the treatment of Botulinum Toxin A (aka Botox), as it enhances and prolongs the anti-wrinkle effect of injections even after 6 months.
SHEEESH!! That sure sounds like a lot of stuff and…BOY DOES IT WORK!
Within a month of using this product, my skin went from bumpy, dull, and dry to looking more healthy and radiant and feeling oh so soft. The rest of the products in my skincare routine worked even better than before, giving me the result I was desperately after.
I have thoroughly enjoyed using this product under my moisturiser and especially before I apply my makeup as it definitely firms up my skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines. It also gives me a natural botox look…just kidding! No, but seriously, it really does help with my smile lines – which is a big help because makeup always seems to settle in there!
So far, it’s my favourite part of my skincare routine!
Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
The website described this serum as one that reduced the appearance of skin blemishes and de-congested the skin, by balancing out sebum activity (i.e. reduces excessive oiliness)
Okay, I thought, sounds good…but after some more research I also found the following:
- Niacinamide protects the skin from the infrared heat of the sun.
- Niacinamide will assist in the reduction of uneven pigmentation i.e. helps with hyperpigmentation (Note: It’s the main ingredient in a lot of “Brightening” products especially face masks)
- Niacinamide as an antioxidant reduces the appearance of dull and sallow skin due to constant exposure to free radicals and glycation. Therefore, it improves the skin’s ability to deal with the damage.
Do you want to buy it yet? Haha.
I’ve been using this serum for about a month now and I must say, I’ve been reaching for this one a lot in the evenings, especially as I find it really helps with the hyperpigmentation of some of my old spots. It didn’t really do much to my very red and inflamed spots (I use another product to spot-treat my spots) but I would say that in combination with the Buffet, Niacinamide/Zinc has helped my skin look and feel less sallow, more radiant and more alive – for sure!
NOTE – This does not TREAT acne, it reduces the appearance and the associated redness that comes with acne, but is not treating the cause of the acne.
Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Hyaluronic Acid helps retain water in the skin which in turn helps keeps the skin plump, subtle and happy. What makes this serum unique, is that it contains hyaluronic acid molecules that are small, medium and large, ensuring that the effects are skin deep. The differing size of the molecules ensure that the chemical penetrates multiple layers of the skin (i.e. superficial, deep and…deeper?) are kept hydrated.
Using this serum before The Buffet has been a game changer for me. I LOVE it! My bare skin looks so much healthier, my moisturisers work so much better and my skin stays hydrated for a lot longer – to the point where I find myself surprised by how soft my skin feels throughout the day. Even my makeup sits better on my skin. I like using this serum before using any other serums or moisturisers, to make sure that my skin is subtle enough so that everything I put on top of it sinks right in. This in combination with The Buffet have really helped my skin look a lot younger and healthier.
To sum up, I’ve had such a positive experience with these products I can’t wait to try more!!
